 Metallica Update

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told a Los Angeles radio station on Monday (May 5th) that the band's new web site, MissionMetallica.com, will showcase the kind of "making-of-the-album" features usually found these days on a DVD accompanying a CD release. Ulrich explained, "We thought, instead of doing the usual DVDs and all that, why don't we just do it on the Internet and people can kind of tune in every day, watch clips, contests, get updates for what's going on with the record and kind of watch the last couple of months of song titles, album titles, final mixes...So it's kind of a little bit of a countdown type of thing. It should be fun."

  • MissionMetallica.com launches on Monday (May 12th). Ulrich also told the station, "Knock on wood, this week should be our last week in the studio," adding that the group expects to get its ninth album out in September.
  • Ulrich said that fans can expect to hear new material "about five minutes after we finish playing it -- thanks to the Internet," although he did not say how soon the band will begin playing some new songs live.
  • Metallica will top the bill for the annual "Weenie Roast" festival sponsored by Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM. The show, scheduled for May 17th at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California, will also feature sets from the Offspring, the Raconteurs, Rise Against, Pennywise, the Bravery, Seether, Scars On Broadway and more. This date joins two previously announced Metallica shows on May 16th in Tucson, Arizona and in mid-June at Tennessee's Bonnaroo festival.

What Do You Want To Know?
Thank you Bayley B. and Justin (two of our talented Weekend Warriors) for giving me questions to answer for my bio! If there’s anything that you want to know about me, feel free to email me at homegrown@wclg.com. If I like the question enough, I may post it!

1. Where are you from? What made you come to West Virginia and why did you stay?
WOW! Three questions at once, I like your style. I’m originally from Dale City Virginia which is about 20 minutes outside of DC. I came to West Virginia for school at WVU and I stayed because I love this state.

2. What is your favorite thing to do in the entire world?
That’s easy, hang out with my friends and listen to and play music!

3. What do you do in your spare time?
HA! What spare time? Kidding… right now I’m teaching myself how to play the guitar, so writing music. I also write poetry, more recently I’ve gotten into Spoken Word Poetry, which is performing poetry. Other then that, just hanging out with friends.

4.What is your biggest pet peeve?
I have a few but the two biggest… One – I hate bad table manners, bad manners in general, but especially at the table, I don’t want to hear you eat, nor do I want to see the food in your mouth while you eat… and Two – people make too many assumptions, we’re all at fault, but I hate assumptions

5.What is the best thing about your job? The worst?
That’s easy… best thing... I get paid to listen to music, research music, and surround myself in the world that music creates... and worst – my life is on the air and it's a lot of work. People think that we just sit on our asses and play music... there is so much more to this job. Plus, I can't not take my job personally... hell... I'm an "On-Air Personality"... see, right there in my title!

6. What’s the greatest thing you’ve ever done as a DJ?
I don’t know if I’ve been a DJ long enough to have done anything that great. I did talk a teenager out of suicide, she still calls me 2 ½ years later. I guess that would be the greatest thing!

7. What is your most memorable interview?
I had to change this answer after the Bad Boys of Rock Tour. I had the chance to interview a few of the guys from Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Hinder... and I have to say that Josh Todd and Keith Nelson of Buckcherry are now my favorite interviewees! (is that a word) They were hilarious! Easy to talk to! I felt more like I was talking with friends then interviewing a band... which is probably why I got yelled at for making the interview too long!

8.What celebrity would you like to meet?
Oh that’s hard – there are so many – I’ve met a bunch, probably either Maynard or Robert Plant, Robin Williams, Jimmy Page, damnit… this is a hard question!

9. Who is your biggest influence?
I don’t really have one as far as DJing. This isn’t something I always wanted to do, so I never grew up idolizing anyone. I guess life in general is my biggest influence. Does that count as an answer?

10. What tips would you give someone who wants to be a DJ?
Don’t give up! This job can be frustrating at times. There is a lot more work involved then you realize at first. You can’t come into radio thinking that you can get by on a good personality. You have to research and use things from your life. So you have to learn to not embarrass easily.
