Welcome to The Shotgun/Throwdown, your daily West Virginia sports roundup (that we didn’t already talk about in another article) with some sophomoric humor and daily distractions thrown in for good measure. And if there’s something we missed, be sure to talk about it in the comments.

Golf Heads to Big 12 Championship | West Virginia University Athletics
The West Virginia University golf team will compete in the Big 12 Golf Championship from Monday to Wednesday in Trinity, Texas. No. 8 seed West Virginia will be paired with No. 7 Houston and No. 9 Kansas State and will tee off on No. 1 at 9:20 a.m. ET on Monday. Round 2 will begin around 2:50 p.m. ET on the No. 10 tee.

Mountaineers Putting Lots of Emphasis on Kickoff Coverage This Spring | West Virginia University Athletics

As college football programs go through the stretch run of spring practice, many players have made their intentions known they’re in the mix for a new program. The spring transfer portal window for college football players opened Tuesday of this week and remains open through April 30.

DeVries Announces Hiring of Nelson Hernandez | West Virginia University Athletics
West Virginia University men's basketball coach Darian DeVries has announced the hiring of Nelson Hernandez as director of player personnel/recruiting for the Mountaineers.

WVU set to add a pair of Illinois transfers | WV MetroNews
Just days after Chester Frazier’s hiring as the new associate head coach at WVU, a pair of Frazier’s former players at Illinois have committed to join the Mountaineers.


BASEBALL

Mountaineers Swept in Doubleheader at Texas Tech | West Virginia University Athletics
The No. 22 WVU baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Texas Tech on Sunday, falling in game one, 6-4, before losing 3-1 in the series finale. The Mountaineers go to 23-16 and 11-7 in the Big 12.

Mountaineers Collect Three Gold Medals on Saturday | West Virginia University Athletics
The West Virginia University track and field team hosted the Mountaineer Twilight on Saturday at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown. Saturday's meet was highlighted by a Mountaineer sweep in the women's 800 meter.

Miles McBride has continued his hot streak for the New York Knicks into the opening round of the NBA playoffs. The Knicks tipped off against the 76ers in game one on Saturday night, and McBride got hot and excelled off the bench.

Waiting is the hardest part for Zach Frazier as the NFL Draft nears | WV MetroNews
Zach Frazier has worn the No. 54 jersey for the last eight years. In that time, he led Fairmont Senior High School to a state championship and helped to build the most dominant position group for the Mountaineers. This weekend, Frazier will hear his name called at the NFL Draft and fitting of his soft-spoken nature, he will receive the news of his new football home at a low-key gathering.


THE REPORT

  • Alek Manoah pitched well in his most recent rehab outing on Friday, tossing 5 2/3 innings with six hits and two runs allowed, no walks and five strikeouts for Triple-A Buffalo. He threw 92 pitches as he continues to build up his pitch count. Manoah likely will make at least one more rehab start for Buffalo and that the Blue Jays will determine when to activate him based on how recovers from that start.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals optioned Victor Scott II to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday after a rough first month in the majors. Scott scored six runs and recorded two RBI and two steals while striking out 15 times and walking twice over 65 plate appearances since opening day.
  • Nathan Adrian finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds in Vanoli Cremona’s 84-77 win over Germani Brescia in Italy’s LBA Serie A on Saturday.
  • Teyvon Meyers led TED Kolejliler to a 94-85 win over Esenler Erokspor in the Turkish Basketball League on Sunday, finishing with 24 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds.
  • Esa Ahmad scored 12 points and pulled down 6 rebounds in Medi Bayreuth’s 88-78 win over Uni Baskets Paderborn in Germany’s Pro A league.
  • Jaysean Paige turned in 8 points and 4 assists as Mets Guaynabo escaped with a 72-71 win over Santeros de Aguada on Friday.
