Pens Points: Stymied at Home

Penguins drop shootout decision to Stars at home. Shake off the loss with a Wednesday edition of Pens Points.

Back on the ice after two days off, the Pittsburgh Penguins continued their season long homestand with a shootout loss to the Dallas Stars. Dallas took an early lead in the contest but John Marino brought the game level with his first goal of the season. That was all the offense there was to write home about as the goalies stole the show most of the night. Tristan Jarry looked the best he has all season, but Braden Holtby was slightly better to lift the Stars to victory. [Pensburgh]

After being a last minute scratch before the season opener last week, defenseman Mark Matheson made his season debut on Tuesday night. For the first time this season, Penguins fans got a look at a full strength blue line. [Trib Live]

As some of the Penguins top guns remain missing from the lineup they will need to continue to get scoring from their depth players. Through three games this season, some unlikely names are showing up on the scoresheet. [Trib Live]

What the depth has provided the Penguins in the early going this season has been nothing short of elite. Credit for building that depth goes to Ron Hextall and credit for properly deploying it lands with head coach Mike Sullivan. [The Hockey Writers]

Though his time with the Penguins was forgettable and he knows plays for the rival Philadelphia Flyers, Derick Brassard made history on Monday night. Brassard became just the 11th player in NHL history to score with nine different teams. [Trib Live]

News and notes from around the NHL...

Hall of Famer and four-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Bossy has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Bossy has been doing analysis for TVA Sports in Canada and will stepping away from his role to focus on his recovery. [NHL]

And then there were none. Just days before their home opener, the Vancouver Canucks received approval from the local government to have full capacity at Rogers Arena, making them the last team in the NHL to receive such approval. [Sportsnet]
