PITTSBURGH PA — The Pittsburgh Penguins have asked the state to approve separate seating areas for coronavirus vaccinated and non-vaccinated fans, but Gov. Tom Wolf is lukewarm to the idea.

The Penguins are believed to be the first professional sports team in the country to propose separate seating areas for vaccinated and non-vaccinated fans.

“We are encouraged by the number of people in and around the region that have been vaccinated and feel that this would be a safe and effective way to allow more fans access to attend games,” Penguins CEO David Morehouse wrote in a message to season ticket holders, WTAE-TV reported.

Wolf addressed the issue at a news conference in Washington County, saying that the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has noted that even those who have been vaccinated still have to be cautious, even at outdoor events.

"They originally wanted to have games with just people who are vaccinated. Now they want to separate them," Wolf said. "One of the things that was in the CDC guidelines was that you've still got to be careful, even if you've been vaccinated, and even if you're in the outdoors if you're at a crowded event -- although the Phillies and Pirates haven't been all that crowded lately -- but even at outdoor events, you want to be a little careful."

Wolf did not indicate when, or if, the state will act on the Penguins request.
