Britpop legends Blur recently shared a video for “St. Charles Square,” the second single from their upcoming album, The Ballad of Darren, which is due out July 21 via Parlophone/Warner.

“St. Charles Square is a place where the ghosts of monsters can be found,” frontman Damon Albarn said in a press release. The release also describes the chorus as being “encircled by backing vocals that compound the sense of encroaching peril,” alongside the intriguing guitars from longtime member Graham Coxon.

“‘Cause there is something down here/ And it’s living under the floorboards/ It’s grabbed me ’round the neck with its long and slender claws,” Albarn sings.

The Ballad of Darren is an “aftershock record, reflection and comment on where we find ourselves now,” says Albarn.

Albarn told Zane Lowe on Apple Music that the band had to persuade him to build the record around his demoes as a four-piece, rather than just with guitarist Graham Coxon.

“A lot of the time, I just do it on my own really,” Albarn said. “The reward of everyone playing together is one I do acknowledge as being maybe the greatest. You’ve got to keep it real. I’ve been playing with them since I was a kid. So to be able to chart that ridiculous journey from being teenagers to being five years off 60 is quite… it’s a little bit odd but wonderful at the same time. It’s wonderful.”

The band previously released “The Narcissist” from the upcoming record.
